About George

Dutch Artist George Heidweiller, based in Amsterdam, Holland,currently working,living and studying in Santa Fe, New Mexico, started his artist career during his study at the Royal Academy of Arts in the Hague in the early 80ties. Shortly after ending his study his work was commisioned by the Dutch Governement. He then took a apprentice place with Freek Henkes(google!) where he stayed for one year, learning the financial and commercial aspects of the trade. His first show at the Millers gallery was a sell out.He was 23 years at the moment. He stayed at the academy for a 3 year period after which he decided to change from graphic design to painting. "

After 1 year with Freek Henkes ,artist,musician and performer(1 % inspiratie 99% transpiratie} George left for Amsterdam,the centre of arts in Holland.

He worked for another year as Assistant Art director for a Multi media company while still making paintings and commisions. He shared a studio with Jan Rothuizen, who later went to New York to paint with Keith Haring. The following year George met Keith Haring at one of his last shows in Dusseldorf, Germany.

George decided is was time to spend his time on painting only and he quit his job as an art director. He also ended his study at the academy in Rotterdam, where he studied, under the supervision of Saatchi&Saatchi,commercial art direction after being selected from a group of artists and junior art directors and copywriters.

George spent a half year traveling to INdia and Thailand.

His work was selected for ARCO, a Art fair in Barcelona. After several group and solo shows in Holland he started to rent his own studio in the center of Amsterdam, starting to experiement with the collage technique he still is using.

Later he was invited to Adelaide, Australie to work with international artist Harry Riedl. They made a road movie, traveling through the Simpson Desert. After another year traveling through India where he picked up his vibrant colour use George returned to his studio in Amsterdam. He kept on making collages on a large scale and in big sizes. All of these works were aquired by collectioners . George started to use silkscreens in his paintings and collages. To such a scale that he decided to start his own silkscreenstudio, employing 2 of Hollands best silkscreeners, not only to make his own work, but also the work of some of Hollands best artists as Paul Blanca, Herman Brood, Peter Klashorst and others. This studio was called Amsterdam Modern. His businesspartner was Peter Houweling.

The same year he opened his screenstudio George also opened Amsterdam biggest Art club, catering to 1500 people at the height of its succes. This club or Artsoceiity called “LOOS” worked as a platform for different cultures as the arts, dance and performing arts. After 2 years George and his asociates had to change location.

His next location was in the docks of Amsterdam where he exploited a huge warehouse for his screenprinting,painting, huge parties and renting the studio for clients as Dieselclothing for promotional purpose. He starts to assist Holland most famous artist, Herman Brood(google this man!!), to expand his artisitic skills and got to meet many famous clients of Herman. Such as U2. Bono and the band visited Herman on his birthday.

George’s own work kept on developing while showing in Madrid,Spain and in Ibiza. George and his family,wife and 1 daughter lived and worked for half a year in Madrid for Mundo HIgh Magazine . George his work with silkscreening got him to start designing for ART 4 use. He designed their clothingline selling at one point to more than a 100 shops throughout Europe.

Two years ago while attending the Burning Man Festival George visited Santa Fe, New Mexico for the first time. Santa Fe is one of the usa largest arttowns with over 200 galeries and a large comunity of artists and dealers.After a visit to the SFCC (santa fe comunical college)with freind and now neighbour Monique deNyijs and seeing the proffessional and very up to date art department , he decided that it could be possible to take a short brake from his professional paintwork to study sculpture, ceramics handbuiilding, welding and 3 -dimensional design at the SFCC.

Still here after almost 3 years,We have decided to stay for another year.
